For an easy, affordable, no-sew cosplay!

I’m very eager to write my first Closet Cosplay for one of my favorite antagonists: Rize Kamishiro!

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I cosplay her very frequently, probably my most cosplayed character. I also don’t have her official costuming, I’ve created her character out of my own closet and makeup. Many of the characters I cosplay I don’t have an official costume for and I instead make one. No, I don’t sew one up either, I suck at sewing and don’t have the patience for a full out costume. I design an outfit and put pieces of different clothing together until I get the outfit I want! I always try to make a multifunctional cosplay as well, where I can still wear it out as a normal outfit and to a convention as a cosplay.

On top of no-sewing and multifunctional, it’s also extremely affordable! Sounds too good to be true? Just wait and see.

When we first meet her in the show Tokyo Ghoul, Rize is a very polished and eloquent book worm. She’s also very fashion forward as you can see above.

I took Rize as a challenge. She has a very unique style and I wondered: how am I going to make a CC that keeps the integrity of the character but also something you could wear out normally.

I won’t lie, her tights are atrocious. I didn’t want to put them with the outfit but I still want to be true to her character. Therefore, I decided to include them at the end as an optional piece for you to pick!

One last note: the links and pieces I suggest don’t have to be the ones you choose! I wanted to provide easy access options with the links included to inspire you. The pieces I picked may still not be an ideal price for you, so, I strongly recommend going to your local thrift stores to get a better, cheaper deal for similar pieces of the outfit!

With that said, let’s jump right in Rize’s Closet Cosplay!

The Dress

A knee length, true white, half sleeve dress.

Now, if you’re short like I am, I would definitely go for a shorter skirt in the dress. However, to stay true to the character, I would keep it at a modest length as much as possible without making you look disproportionate in full body photos.

What I would mend:

The length in skirt depending on height

collar shape— lower or a V-neck

Price: $26.99

The Cardigan

Again, match the length of the cardigan to the length of the dress the best you can depending on your height.

If the lengths match, even if the cardigan is a bit longer, the outfit will have this really cute layered effect. If your cardigan is too short, you may end up looking like a fourth grader going to Sunday School. Beware!

If you can find a low-to-high cardigan, that would look extremely cute with your dress!

What I would mend:

Stick with a more flowy material instead of knitted

Price: $19.99

The Belt

I was unable to choose between two belts, the first one I absolutely loved, the second one is more true the Rize’s outfit.

This belt comes in a lace or a leather style, as shown above, and both I adored. It’s a cute and a very solid styled belt, and the option I would choose for my Rize Closet Cosplay, however, it does lack the more modern style of her dress’s belt.

What I would mend:

Put belt over both the dress and the cardigan to cinch in your waist.

Price: $9.99

This belt has the more modern touches you may be looking for in Rize’s Closet Cosplay. I will always try to give you options!

What I would mend:

Put the belt over both the dress and the cardigan to cinch in your waist.

Price: $16.98

The Hair

Whether you have purple hair, a purple wig, or neither, as long as your hair of choice is long enough, I would recommend putting your hair in a side braid to achieve Rize’s hair-to-the-side look. The braid makes a cute twist on Rize’s outfit, making it a bit more trendy.

Makeup

Possibly the most driving factors for people to identify you character in Closet Cosplay is the makeup! That means you have to get creative, and with Rize, that means getting creative with your eye makeup to achieve her ghoul eyes!

This is my favorite makeup tutorial for Rize:

What I would mend:

Instead of face paint (which I’ve tried before and it was a disaster) I would reccomend using everyday makeup for the eye look with Rize’s irises and pupils: lipstick, mattefying eyeshadow, eyeliner, etc.

Optional Pieces

These are the pieces you could do with or without and your outfit would still look complete!

You could just use a regular hair tie or white ribbon to tie off your side braid, or you can try a trendy look with a bunny headband!

Price: $8.99

I think these tights are atrocious with an everyday look, but if your intention is for solely cosplay purposes, be my guest!

Price: $3.99

If you’ve ever been to a convention, you know very well that heels are a dangerous game. A mid heel will stay true to Rize’s character and also won’t murder your feet. I would stick with a muted or light pink color of shoe. I also just love the little bow in the front, it’s innocent and charming just like Rize’s facade.

What I would mend:

Get insoles

Don’t order shoes online

Price: $27.00

I rarely wear Rize’s glasses, I feel like the eye makeup explains her character enough, but that’s just my preference.

What I would mend:

Get a pair of glasses that match your face shape ( ex: heart shape face - cat eye glasses) I believe it’s absolutely necessary to adjust a cosplay to compliment your face and your body the best!

pop out the lenses to avoid light glares in pictures

Price: $6.99

And finally, to tie the Closet Cosplay together, Rize’s Lacey bralette that peaks over her dress. If you’re busty like I am, I pray you find a cute bralette big enough. The struggle is real.

As stated earlier, find or mend a dress with a lower or a V-neck collar if you want to include the bralette.

What I would mend:

If you can’t find one big enough, but still like the bralette, buy it and cut off the bra portion (including lace) and sew the bra on the inside of your dress with the lace peaking out.

Price: $9.99 - $14.99

To Wrap Up

this first Closet Cosplay, I want to remind you, you could find similar pieces at your local thrift stores that may be more affordable.

This outfit can be worn both as an everyday outfit or a cosplay!

I specifically tailored it so that you may wear it discreetly in public as your favorite character while still looking cute; or wear it as a affordable cosplay and people still being able to recognize your character!

Not everyone can afford their favorite cosplay so I hope this inspires you to find a cosplay from your own closet! Everyone should be able to cosplay on a budget and feel good!

Until next time!
